About This Sanctuary
| Pindaya Caves |
Step into a breathtaking subterranean world of ancient devotion. Perched high on a limestone ridge overlooking the town, Pindaya Caves (locally revered as Shwe U Min Natural Cave Pagoda) is one of Myanmar's most awe-inspiring Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The winding, naturally chilled chambers of this massive cave are packed from floor to ceiling with a staggering collection of over 8,000 Buddha statues. Spanning centuries of Buddhist artistry—from the early Konbaung era to modern times—these images are crafted from alabaster, teak, marble, and lacquer, and almost every single one is completely covered in shimmering gold leaf. Walking through this glittering golden labyrinth is an unforgettable, deeply spiritual experience.
