About This Sanctuary

Mwe Taw Kakku Pagoda
Step into one of Asia’s most extraordinary religious and archaeological sites. Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Pa-O self-administered zone, Mwe Taw Kakku Pagoda (commonly known as Kakku) is a mesmerizing complex containing exactly 2,478 historic stupas packed tightly together over an area of just one square kilometer. Dating back over many centuries—with legends tracing its origins to King Ashoka and the Bagan era—the site showcases a spectacular evolution of Shan and Pa-O architectural styles. Walking through the narrow, labyrinth-like pathways between these intricate stone spires, while listening to the delicate, synchronized chiming of thousands of temple bells (Hti) in the wind, is an unforgettable, ethereal experience.
